Intramuros was the site of major institutions of learning, including what is reputed to be the oldest university in Asia, Santo Tomás. Established early in colonial rule, educational institutions initially catered to the needs of Spaniards-training clergy, civil servants and their children. Eventually, schools were established or opened for the different peoples that made up the city of Manila. By the turn of the century, well-to-do mestizos constituted a major portion of the school-going community.
